<\/a><\/p>\nWhy You Should Wash Clothes Before Storing Them<\/h2>\n
Summer clothes carry more than you can see. Body oils, sweat, deodorant and sunscreen soak into fabric, especially around collars, underarms and waistbands. Fresh, those residues are invisible. After several months in a bin, many of them oxidize and turn into yellow or brown marks that are much harder to remove than the original residue would have been.<\/p>\n
The same goes for small spills you never noticed. A drop of iced coffee, lemonade or salad dressing can dry clear and look like nothing in August. Sugars and oils left in the fibers tend to darken over time, which is why a white shirt that went into storage looking fine can come out with a mystery stain on the front.<\/p>\n
Odor is the third reason. A closed container holds whatever smell goes into it, and stale sweat does not improve with time. Finally, there are pests. Clothes moth and carpet beetle larvae feed on natural animal fibers like wool, and they are generally more attracted to fabric that carries sweat or food residue. Clean clothes are not a guarantee against pests, but soiled ones make an easier target.<\/p>\n
Storage Mistakes That Undo a Clean Wash<\/h2>\n
Washing is only half the job. The most common mistake is packing clothes that are not completely dry. Even slight dampness in a sealed bin can lead to mildew spots and a musty smell, so make sure every item is fully dry, including thick seams and pockets, before it goes in.<\/p>\n
The second mistake is long-term storage in the thin plastic bags that come from the dry cleaner. Those are meant to protect clothes on the trip home, not for months on a shelf. They trap moisture and keep fabric from breathing. Breathable cotton or canvas garment bags and fabric storage boxes are a better choice for anything you care about.<\/p>\n
Location matters too. Many Boston basements and attics run damp or swing between hot and cold, which is hard on stored fabric. A closet shelf, the space under a bed or a dry interior storage room is usually a safer bet. If you use lidded plastic bins, only fill them with bone-dry clothes and keep them in a dry spot. - Dry everything completely.<\/strong> Feel the seams and waistbands before you fold.<\/li>\n
- Fold rather than hang knits.<\/strong> Hanging stretches sweaters and lightweight knits over months.<\/li>\n
- Pack in breathable containers<\/strong> and label each one so you know what is inside next spring.<\/li>\n
- Store in a cool, dry place,<\/strong> away from damp basements and hot attics.<\/li>\n
- Bring out winter clothes and bedding clean,<\/strong> since they have been sitting since April.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
