Laundry Without a Car in Boston: Your Real Options, Ranked

Doing laundry without a car in Boston is a normal problem, not a niche one. WBUR reported that 28% of Boston households don’t have access to a vehicle, based on American Community Survey data from 2013 to 2017. If you live in one of those households, laundry day is less about detergent and more about logistics: how far the machines are, how heavy the bag gets, and how many trips the whole thing takes.

This guide walks through the real ways to get laundry done without driving: on foot, by bus or on the Blue Line, and in the middle of a Boston winter. It ranks the options honestly, with the trade-offs of each, so you can pick the one that fits your week instead of the one that just happens to be closest.

"Pickup

What a 20 lb bag of laundry feels like on foot

A week of clothes, a set of sheets and a few towels for two people can easily reach 20 pounds, which is a common size for a single trip. On a scale it does not sound like much. Carried in one hand for six or eight blocks, it is a different story: the bag swings, it bumps your leg on every step, and you end up switching hands at every corner. Add a bottle of detergent and you are close to 25 pounds.

The shape matters as much as the weight. A wide plastic basket is the hardest thing to walk with, because it blocks your view of the sidewalk and forces you to hold it in front of your body. A duffel or a laundry backpack keeps the weight close and frees a hand for doors, railings and crosswalk buttons. A wheeled cart helps on flat sidewalks but becomes dead weight on stairs and snowy curbs.

Then remember that you carry it twice. Clean laundry is not much lighter than dirty laundry, and it is bulkier if you want it to stay folded. If you want a sense of how much your own pile weighs, our laundry weight chart breaks it down item by item.

Taking laundry on the bus or the Blue Line

If the nearest laundromat is more than a comfortable walk away, transit is the next step. In East Boston and Revere that usually means the Blue Line: Maverick, Airport, Wood Island, Orient Heights, Suffolk Downs, Beachmont, Revere Beach and Wonderland. Riding a stop or two with a laundry bag is doable, but buses and trains both add friction: fare gates, stairs or elevators, a crowded car, and the walk at the other end.

A few habits make transit laundry less painful. Travel outside peak commute hours, when cars are emptier and you are not wedging a bag between commuters. Check the MBTA’s elevator alerts before you leave if you depend on one at your station. Keep the bag between your feet rather than on a seat. Two rides plus the cycles can take most of a morning.

Winter changes the math

Everything above gets harder from December to March. Sidewalks narrow to a single shoveled lane, corners fill with plowed snow, and ice forms on the shaded side of the street. Wheeled carts get stuck in slush and have to be lifted over snowbanks at crosswalks.

Winter also adds weight. Sweaters, hoodies, flannel sheets and heavy towels take more space and more pounds than summer clothes, so the same week of laundry produces a noticeably bigger bag. Putting laundry off only makes the eventual trip heavier.

If you keep walking in winter, split the load into two smaller bags, wear boots with real traction, and go in daylight when you can see the ice. Or take laundry off the sidewalk entirely, which is where the options below come in.

Your options ranked, from most effort to least

There are three realistic ways to handle laundry without a car in Boston. Here is how they compare when you are the one carrying the bag.

Option

What you do

Cost at Neptune

Pros

Cons

Walk or ride to a self-service laundromat

Carry the bag there, wash, dry, fold, carry it home

Washer price only; dryers are always free

Cheapest; 90 lb and 130 lb washers handle a big pile in one cycle

Two trips with a heavy bag; an hour or more at the store

Counter drop-off wash & fold

Carry the bag in, come back for it folded

$1.50/lb, no minimum at the counter

No washing, drying or folding; no waiting through cycles

Still two trips carrying laundry

Pickup & delivery

Leave the bag at your door; it comes back folded

$2.00/lb one-time, $1.85/lb recurring; 19 lb minimum ($38)

No carrying, no transit, no icy sidewalks

Higher per-pound price than drop-off; plan around a turnaround of usually 24 to 48 hours

Self-service makes sense if a store is an easy walk away and you like controlling your own wash. At Neptune, all five stores open at 5:30 AM every day, and since dryers are always free, the cost is the washer. Early risers can catch Happy Hour, Tuesday through Thursday from 5:30 to 9:30 AM, with up to $2.00 off select washers.

Counter drop-off is the middle ground: you still carry the bag, but you are in and out in minutes. Pickup and delivery is the only option that removes the carrying entirely, and for a household without a car, the carrying is usually the whole problem.

How pickup and delivery works when you don’t drive

Neptune’s pickup and delivery runs from the 489 Saratoga Street store in East Boston. You schedule a day and time online, which takes about a minute, or through the app on the App Store and Google Play. On that day you leave your laundry at the door in any bag. There is no sorting, counting or labeling on your end. The team sorts, washes, dries and folds it, and it comes back professionally folded, usually within 24 to 48 hours.

Pricing is by weight: $2.00 per pound for a one-time order, or $1.85 per pound when you order twice a month. Each pickup has a 19 lb minimum, which works out to $38. A 20 lb bag costs $40 one-time, and a 30 lb bag costs $60 one-time or $55.50 at the recurring rate. Scheduled pickups have no delivery fee, and there is no forced subscription, so you pay per order. Bulky items like comforters are charged per item in addition to the weight. New customers can take $20 off the first order with code FIRST20.

The service area includes East Boston, Revere, Chelsea, Winthrop and Charlestown, along with other Boston neighborhoods and nearby cities. Full details and the complete area list are on the pickup and delivery page, and if you want a walkthrough first, here is how scheduling a pickup works.

A simple car-free laundry routine

Most people without a car end up mixing options. A common pattern is pickup for the big weekly pile and an occasional walk to a store for something small or urgent. If you would rather wash it yourself, check the Neptune locations for the store nearest you: four stores close at midnight with last load at 10:15 PM, and Malden closes at 10:00 PM with last load at 8:30 PM.
