The College Laundry Guide for Parents: What to Set Up Before Move-In Day

A college laundry service for parents Boston search usually starts a few weeks before move-in, once the packing list is done and the harder logistics questions start — where does the laundry actually happen, and whose job is it to make sure it happens. If your student is heading to Suffolk University, Emerson College, UMass Boston, or Bunker Hill Community College this fall, the honest answer is that dorm laundry rooms are shared, often crowded during exam weeks, and not something an eighteen-year-old living away from home for the first time necessarily prioritizes on their own.

This guide is written for the parent setting things up, not the student doing the wash — a companion guide linked below covers the student’s side of the same question. The goal here is a plan you can set up once, before your student ever unpacks a single box, so laundry stops being a recurring source of phone calls home.

Why Laundry Logistics Are Worth Planning Before Move-In Day

Every dorm laundry room works the same basic way: a shared bank of machines, a card or app payment system, and a schedule that gets unpredictable during midterms, move-in week, and the last week before finals when everyone is doing wash at once. None of that is a crisis on its own, but it’s exactly the kind of low-stakes friction that turns into a stack of laundry sitting in a hamper for two weeks and a phone call home asking how to work the machines.

Setting up a laundry plan before your student arrives on campus removes the decision entirely from week one, when there are a hundred other things competing for their attention — orientation, first classes, a new roommate, a new city. It also means you, not a stressed freshman, get to be the one who compares options and picks one.

Campus-by-Campus: Suffolk, Emerson, UMass Boston, Bunker Hill CC

These four schools sit in different parts of Greater Boston, and each has a different practical laundry situation for a family coordinating from off campus or from out of state. We haven’t measured exact door-to-door mileage between any of these campuses and our five stores, so rather than guess at a distance, here’s what’s actually known about each campus and why a pickup plan sidesteps the question of exact distance entirely.

What all four have in common is that none of them sit within an easy walk of one of Neptune Laundry’s five stores, which is exactly why pickup and delivery from our 489 Saratoga Street location, closest to the downtown Boston campuses via the Blue Line, solves the logistics problem without anyone needing to work out a route on the T with a laundry bag in tow.

Setting Up a Recurring Plan So Your Student Doesn’t Have to Think About It

The simplest version of this plan is a recurring pickup order set up under a parent’s account before move-in, so the schedule — say, every other week — is already decided before your student ever has to think about it. Neptune Laundry’s recurring rate is $1.85 per pound, compared with $2.00 per pound for a one-time pickup order, so a plan set up in advance is also the cheaper way to do it over a semester. New customers get $20 off their first order with code FIRST20, which is a reasonable way to test the pickup and delivery process during the very first week before committing to a recurring schedule.

The practical part for parents is billing: setting the order up on a card you control means a skipped or forgotten payment never turns into a skipped laundry pickup, and a text confirmation goes out when the order is scheduled and again when it’s delivered clean, so you know it happened without having to ask.

What to Pack (and What Not to) for Dorm Laundry

A dorm room doesn’t have space for a full laundry setup, and it doesn’t need one if a pickup plan is already in place. A mesh laundry bag with a drawstring, a small bottle of stain treatment, and a couple of dollars in quarters as a backup for the in-building machines cover almost every situation that comes up during the semester. What isn’t worth packing is a personal iron, a large detergent jug that takes up closet space for a machine your student may rarely use, or a hamper too large to carry down a dorm hallway.

If your student is bringing a comforter, a mattress topper, or bedding heavier than a standard sheet set, it’s worth knowing that these items are usually priced separately from per-pound wash-and-fold — Neptune Laundry’s comforter cleaning runs from $18 for a regular comforter up to $35 for an oversized XL, which is useful to know before the first care package includes an extra blanket that has nowhere practical to be washed.

A Simple Way to Handle It From Out of State

For families coordinating move-in from outside Massachusetts, the appeal of a pickup plan is less about convenience and more about control — you can set it up, pay for it, and confirm it’s running without being on campus yourself. There’s no dorm laundry card to reload from three states away, and no need to trust that a first-semester freshman is going to prioritize a trip to a laundromat over everything else move-in week throws at them. Estimating how much laundry your student actually generates in a typical week helps set realistic expectations for a recurring plan; this weight chart breaks it down piece by piece rather than leaving it to a guess.

Our general back-to-school laundry guide covers the wider back-to-school season across all of our service areas, and if your student would rather read a version written directly to them instead of to you, the student’s version of this guide covers the same ground from their side.
